Breadlands

A hex territory board game for 2 to 6 players, free in your browser. Every kingdom starts with one village, three people and 500 coins. Roll for bread, keep your people fed, raise more of them and claim the island. When every tile is taken, the biggest kingdom wins.

Five kingdoms halfway through a game. Each tile shows the die number that makes it pay out.

A turn

  1. Feed. Your turn starts with your people eating one bread for every tile you hold. If you can't cover it, buy bread from the market or trade for it. Any tile you still can't feed is abandoned and its person is lost (your least useful land goes first, your capital last).
  2. Roll. Then roll the dice. Every tile has a number from 1 to 6. Every tile whose number comes up makes bread for its owner, whoever rolled. In two- and three-player games more dice are rolled, so bread doesn't dry up.
  3. Grow. Spend 2 bread to raise a new person. One a turn, plus one more for every village you hold.
  4. Claim. Every tile needs one person living on it. Tap a glowing tile next to your kingdom to settle a spare person there.
  5. Trade and end your turn when you're done.

Tiles

The market

The market sells bread for 10 coins a loaf, but it only starts with 100 loaves for the whole game and never bakes more. Coins have no other use than buying bread and trading, so spend them when it counts.

Trading

Offer any mix of coins, bread, people and tiles. On your turn you can trade with anyone; on someone else's turn you can make an offer to them. Land changes hands empty, so whoever takes a tile needs a spare person to live there, or the deal is refused. Offers that aren't answered lapse when the turn ends.

Winning

The game ends when every tile has an owner, when only one kingdom is left standing, or after 40 rounds. Most tiles wins; ties go to whoever has more coins and bread.

Tips

  1. Farmland and plains feed a big kingdom; barren land costs as much to hold as it makes.
  2. Take villages early: each one raises an extra person every turn.
  3. Spread your numbers. Land on several different numbers makes bread on more rolls.
  4. Buying out the market early can leave your rivals with nowhere to turn.
  5. A starving neighbour will sell land cheap. Keep some coins ready.
